The Modular Taskforce Cruiser came into being after a report on streamlining fleet operations, which compelled for a new approach. Tagge Industries' proposal was selected from the other contenders, and thus it was contracted to construct the new vessel. Previously, the Empire maintained thousands of each type of support vessel such as hospital cruisers, survey cruisers and communications ships. Dozens of support ships able to fulfill any contingency had to be maintained on sector and oversector Navy planets. Although many of the vessels were not in common use, it was reasoned that having too many ships was preferable than having too few. As a consequence however, this methodology diverted funds from warship production.

Rather than construct a new vessel for each new function, Tagge designers realized that the underlying design for many support craft designs were similar in nature, thus a vessel that could be reconfigured to fit different roles was conceived. Its armament however is quite light for its size, but one must keep in mind that the Taskforce Cruiser's primary mission is support, not combat. In hazardous situations, a group of these vessels are often assigned escorts. Spending merely one day at a space station or orbital facility interchangeable modules with mission specific equipment can be added to the ship. For example a hospital cruiser can be reconfigured into a long range scout or mining survey explorer within that timeframe. The design features a single framework, including command compartments, skeleton crew quarters, life support system, and engines.

Each Taskforce Cruiser may only hold one mission function module at any given time. Entirely a self-contained unit, the mission module need only be attached to the Taskforce Cruiser's skeleton and connected into the life support, communications ports, and power generators. It is currently believed that mini-modules which would allow a Taskforce Cruiser to be outfitted for a variety of smaller scale functions are in the works by Tagge Industries.
