The PX-4 Mobile Command Base was designed to protect its occupants, and thus is constructed within a metallic shell which is almost a half a metre thick. The command pod is encased within a shell of its own, adding to the protective thickness is located at the centre of the vehicle. As a final touch to this security cocoon, reflective shielding covers the outer hull. Its main and only weapon provides an offensive punch, however, in normal operation it does not engage in actual battle. The PX-4 is an observer and command post, designed to provide protection to important persons.

PX-4 Mobile Command Bases offer field combat commanders three things: transportation, protection and a mobile headquarters that can move as their troops do. These vehicles allowed commanders who were once not able to enter, safe passage to hostile battle sites for on the spot observation. Not only does the PX-4 see military use, it is also used by some planetary prefects and governors upon openly hostile planets. Some of these officials have come to rely so heavily upon these vehicles that they rarely travel without it. There are a few cases where some never leave the protective confines, and thus live inside these heavily armoured vehicles.

The commander and his advisors receives up-to-the-minute data and suggestions from the PX-4's sophisticated sensors and computers which monitor and analyse the entire battle as it progresses. Not only do the sensors monitor incoming Imperial communications, they also monitor enemy communications as well. In the strictest sense, the PX-4 is not a weapon of war, however, wars are fought more efficiently due this vehicle's presence.
