The Storm Cannon is an attempt by the Rebellion to fill their need for a ground based air defence unit to limit enemy air superiority. The Rebels designed a set of components that could be employed to upgrade an existing vehicle into a Storm Cannon. Hover and repulsorlift vehicles are not used in Storm Cannon conversions, as they do not possess enough power to support the weight of the additional heavy components. To accurately fire a weapon the vehicle must remain stationary, moving only when threatened or when its target is destroyed. By far, the most effective way to destroy them is to overwhelm its defences from the air or to attack it on the ground where it can be easily outnumbered. A heavy tracked tank is often used as the base vehicle for conversion. Components making up the Storm Cannon include a twin blaster cannon with mounting frame, sensors, and a powerplant for the weapon. In actual practice the Storm Cannon components are mounted on farm machinery, civilian transports or whatever vehicles the Rebels can get their hands on. Due to the required armament the powerplant is unusually large for the vehicle. And due to the size of the powerplant, the vehicle's speed is significantly and adversely affected. More so, the crew space is cramped at best. When the ideal crew size of four cannot be fit inside the Storm Cannon, the vehicle's effectiveness is significantly reduced as two crewmen must perform the duties of four men. |
