The Rebel ULAV is a tiny ground-skimming speeder that is well over 20 years old as of four years after the debacle at the Battle of Endor. Originally, this dated vehicle saw sweeping employment during the later years of the Old Republic, and early years of the Empire, but would be later decommissioned in favour of larger, more mighty designs. The ULAV is no longer manufactured, and thus is only available used. Planetary governments and corporations shunned the ULAV for its diminutive size and unimposing stature. Planetary police forces avoided the ULAV due to its lack of utility, while pirates and criminal gangs also rejected the vehicle due to a lack of cargo capacity. When the Empire removed the sturdy ULAV from service it was nearly forgotten.

Across the Galaxy, massive stockpiles of ULAVs collected dust in Imperial Army storage sites awaiting to be broken up. They were rediscovered by the Rebels, who then mounted a commando raid against a lightly guarded Imperial warehouse on the planet of Hiffis. That raid netted a massive sum of ULAVs, along with other obsolete heavy equipment. Incredibly, most of the vehicles were in decent condition. Once in the Rebels' dirty hands the vehicles underwent only slight modifications; a minor power flow increase. The low efficiency of its old repulsorlift engines means that terrains containing tangled underbrush or jagged rock pose problems for the ULAV. Often, the Rebels would modify the ULAV to operate in harsher climates than they were originally intended.

While the ULAV is incapable of standing up to contemporary combat airspeeders, the Rebels consider it sufficiently quick and agile to effectively evade most blaster artillery rounds. Furthermore, in combination with its low profile and impressive handling (due to its small turning radius) makes the ULAV a very difficult target. It is the tiniest and speediest CAV (Combat Assault Vehicle) in the Rebellion's arsenal. Its major design flaw is its medium blaster cannon. This weapon can only be brought to bear to the forward arc through sharp and difficult manoeuvring, thereby allowing a few quick shots to be unleashed, before the craft quickly gets on the move, so not to be destroyed. Effectively, with this design the Rebels emulate their starfighter hit-and-fade tactics.

*After Endor* Four years after the debacle at Endor, the Rebel ULAV continues to see service with the New Republic. The corvette FarStar was assigned four of these vehicles.
