The Star Galleon was designed to act as both cargo and escort ship, and was in Imperial service at least by the time of the Battle of Yavin. It combines the cargo capacity of a bulk freighter and the sophisticated shielding and armament of a combat vessel. And the design also has the added benefit of being heavily armoured as a cruiser. Since the Star Galleon is able to fill both roles, the requirement of having unarmed or lightly armed freighters escorted by Escort Frigates (most likely Nebulon-B) is eliminated, thereby creating cost savings for the Empire. In addition to these capabilities, this six engine ship was designed repel those intent on capturing its carried cargo should it be boarded. Because of its very nature, the Star Galleon was designed to make it very expensive indeed for those wishing to steal its load.

This new experimental concept was developed due to the increasing number of Imperial cargo freighters that were falling prey to Rebels and pirates. The Star Galleon's turbolasers and concussion missiles allow for an appropriate fire perimeter to be created around the ship. Overflowing with anti-intruder defences, the fortress-like emplacements include: blaster slits and gas dispensers that line the inner hallways and corridors. Furthermore, individual sections of the ship can be sealed off (via force fields and heavy blast doors) by the ship's crew and troops, thereby instituting pockets of resistance within the ship itself. Additionally, controlled from the bridge the ship's interior can be partially reconfigured.

The Star Galleon's cargo hold pod is located in the very centre of the ship and is the last line of defence. This jettisonable cargo bay, once ejected automatically makes the jump into hyperspace (the coordinates are randomly chosen from hundreds of preprogrammed coordinates) via its small onboard hyperdrive. Upon arriving at its destination the pod stays there for a pre-set number of hours before jumping to a new random location. To allow Imperial forces to track down the cargo pod, the pod broadcasts a hypertransceiver signal. Both the signal's frequency and the jump timing are closely held secrets, which are on file at the Imperial Centre (Coruscant). In order to disgorge the cargo pod, the Star Galleon's hull splits along its axis and blows away as pre-placed hull charges detonate. From this point the pod accelerates away from the stricken Star Galleon via its thrusters. Once it clears the debris field (created by the jettison process), it can make the jump into hyperspace. There are two ways to recover the cargo pod; being at the pod's location or transmitting a proper slaving code (a guarded secret) to slave the pod to another ship to allow for a recovery jump.

While this system is intended to deny pirates and Rebels coveting the cargo from getting their hands on it, this system does have one flaw. Once the pod is jettisoned there is no way to protect it. If the raiders can capture the pod with tractor beams or ion cannons before the pod enters hyperspace then only one last defence stands in their way. To prevent unauthorized access, the cargo pod may also be booby trapped. Traps include: fragmentation explosives (up to 6D damage, plus causes a spacesuit breach), locks with high-charge electric shocks (5D damage), and automatic anti-personnel blasters (fire control 4D and 4D damage). Failure to get passed its security systems and programming will set off these traps and will probably kill the raider each time.

Beyond its primary role, the Star Galleon has seen use as a convoy escort and intercepting smuggling ships when no other vessels were available. Although, it must be noted that the latter role occurredsome time after the Battle of Endor (but before the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn [5 years after Endor]). In the Isen System a Mestapol Zephyer Light Combat Fighter called the Blood Hawk in a surprise attack, destroyed a damaged Star Galleon, whose shields were at one-half efficiency and two-thirds of the turbolasers were concentrated on protecting the ship from asteroid strikes. As well equipped as it is, it is known that a CR90 Corvette supported by a squadron of Y-Wings could engage and disable a Star Galleon.
