    The TIE Advanced x1 is based on the original design (Prototype), featuring an elongated rear deck and unique solar array wings. The TIE Advanced x1 was initially produced in only modest numbers. By the Battle of Hoth they had been deployed to a number of Imperial Navy fleets, including Lord Vader's fleet. Darth Vader has one for his personal missions. In a radical departure from standard Imperial policy, the TIE Advanced x1 was the first hyperspace capable and shielded fighter in the TIE series. Many of the refinements in this vessel were incorporated into the TIE Interceptor and the TIE Advanced. Due to the inefficient shield generators, which consumed a great deal of power and the increase mass caused by the additional heavy armour plating, were the reasons why the TIE Advanced x1 is only slightly faster than the TIE Fighter. Also, this fighter was less manoeuvrable than the TIE Fighter.

    The TIE Advanced x1 proved effective in battle because it could endure numerous direct hits. The pilot survival rate was also greatly increased by the addition of a limited use hyperdrive, which allowed the pilot to leave a hopeless battle. Despite the starfighter's success, with the excessive cost of these fighters the Empire did not order large quantities of them. However, many Imperial Navy strategists theorized that Imperial officers feared a hyperspace capable starfighter to be purchased by the Imperial Navy, citing that is would provide an excuse by Imperial bureaucrats to slash orders for new capital starships. By the Battle of Endor, the large increase of TIE Interceptor production meant the end of production for the TIE Advanced x1. Also the same type of ion engines and solar ionization reactors are used in the TIE Interceptor. Some elite Imperial squadrons, favouring the shielding and hyperdrive capabilities of the TIE Advanced x1, continue to fly it into combat. They use them to perform lightning strikes into and out of target systems independent of support carriers.

    The TIE Advanced x1 Prototype was the fighter used by Lord Vader at the Battle of Yavin. That particular fighter was one of several TIE prototypes fielded by the Sienar Fleet Systems design team during the critical years between the Battle of Yavin and the Battle of Endor. The TIE Advanced x1 Prototype was perhaps the most successful of these prototypes. This prototype was widely tested in field trials by elite Imperial squadrons before being passed over for other designs, though pilots spoke highly of its performance.
