The TIE Starfighter was the predecessor to the TIE/ln which serves the Galactic Empire with distinction. This second generation of TIE Fighter can still be found in the flight decks of some remote Imperial garrisons and outlying Imperial Navy Fleets. During the early years of the New Order when the Imperial Military began its expansion, calls from some military personnel arose to replace the T.I.E. with a more impressive, longer range, hyperdrive-capable starfighter. It was during this period that several corporations, including the treacherous Incom Corporation invested a large sum to heed the call for a new space superiority starfighter. Many basic designs employed by the Rebel Alliance were developed during this period.

Due to financial constraints in the Imperial Navy's budget after its commitment to the Imperial Star Destroyer, it was decided to upgrade the Old Republic T.I.E. to the Imperial TIE, under direct Imperial control. This second generation TIE is the base from which TIE variants were built. This upgraded model cost the Empire hundreds of trillions of credits, but at about one third the estimated cost of a long-range fighter. Not only was this fighter employed by the Empire, it is also employed by corporate security forces, local system or planetary governments, and warlords. The few planetary and local forces which do operate these fighters, perform less capably than their Imperial counterparts due to their lack of rigorous pilot training.
