The VXI-3 Electrotelescope is a smaller model of electro-optical devices that was available on the market at least before the Battle of Derra IV. Effectively, electrotelescopes are more powerful than electrobinoculars and macrobinoculars. They are capable of incredible magnification of objects, enhancing existing light sources, and minimizing atmospheric haze and other distortions. While the VXI-3 is intended to facilitate the observation of nearby celestial bodies, it has found other applications such as sensor backup and early warning. For the Rebels, they used the VXI-3 for the latter application. Smaller inhabited colonies employ it to provide warning against comets and asteroids that may impact the colony.

This two stage device, uses a general scanning mode that covers a large area, at the expense of resolution and detail. When an anomaly or energy emission (from a starship for example) is detected a detailed scan is focused upon that small area. Entirely passive, the VXI-3 only senses incoming light, energy and communications emissions, thereby making it excellent for use on many planets such as Derra IV, Hoth, Tierfron, and Thila that hold concealed Rebel bases. On Hoth, nearly a dozen VXI-3s were deployed at the main base and at remote observation posts. Fortunately, for the Empire this network was impeded by that star system's large asteroid and comet count.
